So free, so infinite His grace!

He left heaven and the courts of glory for the sake of His Bride. There was an awful moment when He cried out, ‘My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?’ For that moment He was separated from His Father. And why? Oh, that He might purchase and save this Bride of His, who now, as the result of that operation, is a part of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones.

This is, I say, the supreme mystery. There is nothing more wonderful, there is nothing more glorious than this. We are sharers of His human nature, we are joined to Him, and we shall be, throughout eternity. That is why we are told in the Scriptures that we shall be above the angels and ‘judge’ them. ‘Know ye not’, says Paul in 1 Corinthians 6, ‘that the saints shall judge the world, that the saints shall judge angels?’ Even angels! Why? Because we are raised above them; we are in the Son, we are a part of Him, joined to Him, ‘one flesh’ with Him. The church is the Bride of Christ, and as we think of this relationship we must always gaze into this mystery and realize that ‘we are members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones’. But above all let us realize what He did in order that we might become His. He left His Father’s throne above, ‘He humbled Himself’, ‘He made Himself of no reputation’—that is how He has loved the church! ‘Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for it.
